Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) or ubiquinone is essentially a vitamin or vitamin-like substance. Synthesized in all tissues, it is abundant in the membranes of the mitochondrion, sometimes described as "cellular power plants". CoQ10 serves as an important antioxidant in both mitochondria and lipid membranes, where it protects our cells in their battle against the destructive effects of free radicals.
Recent research indicates that topically applied CoQ10 may protect the skin against aging caused by exposure to ultraviolet light. German scientists demonstrated that CoQ10 applied topically penetrates the skin’s surface and reduced oxidative stress (a contributor to aging), as well as a marked reduction in the depth of wrinkles. In addition, topical CoQ10 helped protect the skin from the effects of UVA rays. They concluded that CoQ10 has the efficacy to prevent many of the detrimental effects of photoaging, thus promoting more youthful-looking skin.
