Although rice or sand can be used in our ceramic incense bowls to support all varieties of stick, coil and cone incenses, we recommend Shoyeido's white ash. The ash - actually mostly diatomaceous earth (a natural, fossilized algae that forms as a soft sedimentary rock) with traces of types of clay such as bentonite and pearlite - is of the highest-quality for incense ceremony available, and allows the entire incense to burn, leaving no residue ash to clean.
